“Is this financial crisis going to be the end of green, or is green going to be how we end this financial crisis?”

-- David Rothkopf (source)

by Ed Chew

“THE WORLD IS FLAT” is the title of the book by Thomas Friedman, a New York Times columnist that caught my attention few years back. Ever since then, I have been an ardent visitor to Thomas Friedman’s website in hope to get a first hand info on his current world view of political science. I am fond of short phrases or quotes, particularly one that sounds obscured in meaning, such as the title of this book.

No, the world isn’t flat as we all already know ever since the time of Copernicus, Galileo and Keppel; so does Thomas Friedman. This particular title is only to be understood as a metaphoric description of the current state of the world from an economist’s point of view – no less and yes more!

World's most underrated architect: Alvaro Siza

By Christopher Hawthorne

The Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza picked up another significant honor today: The Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects. That's on top of the Pritzker Prize he won in 1992 and a slew of other international awards he's landed during the course of a five-decade career...>>>Read More.

Seven pillars of Le Corbusier

Detractors claim he was a sex-starved automaton who destroyed our cities. Devotees say he revolutionised urban living. On the eve of a major retrospective, we explore the true legacy of this controversial architect

By Kevin Jackson

To his admirers (and they are legion), he was the greatest genius of modern architecture; to his detractors (also many), its greatest disaster...>>> Read More

"Architecture and film are both spatial arts. They are founded on the organisation of space, whether real or imaginary. In film the effect is not always noticed, so deeply is it embedded in film's very language: different shots from different angles project into a visual area and are then cut together to provide a 'whole' "

-- Shaun de Waal, film critic.

Space is the place

by Shaun de Waal

...this space is imaginary; often it is constructed on sets, with the frame occluding what lies beyond the set, or it is a selective view of a real space that has been transformed by the imagination and its use in storytelling...>>> Read More

“We never start with a blank piece of paper. There’s always something already there – the history, the use, the way they live”

-- Jonathan Tuckey, British architect

An architect who gives old stories new endings

By Edwin Heathcote

...“I think what we do is quite simple,” Tuckey concludes. “Most people seem to live in old buildings that they love [but] 50 per cent is totally dysfunctional. We just try to make a new hybrid, a collaboration between today and yesterday, which I think is how most people actually want to live. It goes beyond modernism. It can be something new and those juxtapositions can be very exciting.” >>>Read More

“Once a plastic drinks bottle is empty, it is perceived as redundant and then thrown away. I wanted to challenge this wasteful paradigm”

I think this whole piece of “junk” is really ingenious. Forgive me for the pun but strictly speaking, it is a junk - a by-product of waste that you and I hadn’t had the slightest thought that this could turn out to be a chandelier. And this “junk” is made of discarded plastic bottle petal bases. After all, nothing shall go to waste not even the waste itself!!! >>> Read More

The King of Green Architecture

by David Kushner

...I think we have to stay optimistic if we’re designers, because designers wake up every morning trying to make the world a better place. So the idea is to say, “Things could be better if we apply ourselves in different ways.” On the one hand designers are optimistic that, as a species, we’ll rise to the occasion and see that we have a fundamental design flaw: We don’t recognize that our processes could integrate with natural systems in delightful ways instead of destructive ways...>>>Read More
