Sayings Worth Quoting, Quotations Worth Sharing

There won't be any postings until Monday but the news feeds will be running as usual.

"I love fools' experiments. I am always making them"

-- Charles Darwin, English naturalist. (Source)

If there is one book that had shaped the modern world; introduced a mode of thinking that had transformed the logic of knowledge; and hugely influenced the like of Richard Dawkins and Daniel Dennet, it has to be the “Origin of Species” by Charles Darwin.

Nearly 150 years after the publication of the book, millions of preserved specimens had been collected and housed in museums throughout the world. One notable museum that had attracted hundreds of thousands visitors since its establishment in 1881and houses a significant collection of Darwin’s works, is Natural History Museum of London.

The Museum has recently added an extension to its Victorian frontage, providing a state-of-the-art exhibition space. This newly built Darwin Centre is dubbed as the “Cocoon”, and cost an estimated of £78 million and hundreds of manpower to build. This gigantic cocoon, designed by the Danish architect C F Møller, will debut in September 2008.

The Cocoon-like structure differs in form from its enveloping space and hence strengthening its image as a freestanding object - a space within a space.  Image source:

"Music, like art and architecture, has shape, texture, rhythm, emotion, and mystery. It conjures images in the mind's eye through use of narrative poetry...It washes the senses with soundscapes"

-- Mike Mays of Elliott + Associates Architects

To Goethe architecture is frozen music while Hassan Fathy is famously quoted as saying "architecture is music frozen in place and music is architecture frozen in time". So what do music and architecture have in common? Why is the relationship between architecture and music worth investigating? A July issue of Contract had an article on these interestingly different yet parallel subjects.

"I have yet to come up with the right word for describing Zumthor’s architecture. In part it involves the indestructibility of archaic building forms. It involves the nobility of Japanese lacquerwork. It involves the rightness of the use of forms that are perfectly concentrated on themselves. Would “right” be the right word?...Where the right place exists, life cannot be so false."

-- Hans-Joachim Muller, art critic

A new exhibition exploring the architecture of the award winning architect Peter Zumthor will premier at the EXPERIMENTADESIGN LISBOA - a cultural design biennale of the Portuguese association Experimenta - from September 6 to November 2, 2008.

What?...Sustainability is boring?

Standing by the roadside next to a newspaper vendor this morning, all I saw was one headline after another praising the government for its “people-friendly” budget unveiled by the Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi in the Parliament yesterday evening. With an allocation of RM 207.9 million budget for 2009, this is the country’s biggest spending plan ever allocated to boost up the dwindling economy.
